John Pope, Union general in the American Civil War, 1862-1867. Pope (1822-1892) was given command of the Army of Virginia in 1862. He was relieved of his command after suffering a heavy defeat at the Second Battle of Bull Run in August of that year. He spent the rest of his army career serving with some distinction in the West.
