EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the historic meeting between two literary giants, James Boswell and Dr. Samuel Johnson, in London's Covent Garden. The year was 1763 when Boswell, a Scottish diarist and man of letters, first encountered the renowned English author, critic, and lexicographer. The scene unfolds in the back shop of Tom Davies' bookshop on Russell Street. It was here that their friendship blossomed as they engaged in intellectual discourse that would shape both their lives. Inspired by their connection, Boswell later embarked on a journey with Johnson through the rugged landscapes of the Scottish Hebrides. Frederick Adcock's skilled engraving transports us to this momentous occasion from over a century ago. The monochrome aesthetic adds an air of timelessness to this snapshot of history. This image is part of John Adcock's Famous Houses and Literary Shrines of London collection published in 1912 by J M Dent and Sons. It serves as a testament to the enduring legacy left behind by these influential figures who shaped literature during the 18th century. As we gaze upon this print, we are reminded not only of Boswell's subsequent biography about Johnson but also how chance encounters can lead to profound friendships that leave an indelible mark on our world.
