EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the remarkable George Sand, a prominent figure in 19th century French literature and feminism. Taken in 1900 by Calamatta, this portrait captures the essence of Sand's strength and determination. Born Amandine Aurore Lucie Dupin, Sand defied societal norms by leaving her husband at the age of 27 and moving to Paris with her two children. Immersed in the bohemian artistic circle, she fearlessly pursued her passions as both a novelist and feminist. Sand's life was marked by numerous romantic relationships, including notable figures such as Jules Sandeau, Prosper Merimee, Lamenais, Pierre Leroux. However, it was her decade-long affair with composer Frederic Chopin that became legendary. Inheriting her grandmother's property in Nohant-Berry in 1848 allowed Sand to establish a permanent residence where she could fully embrace her creativity. It was here that she wrote some of her most influential works while championing women's rights through her writing. Calamatta skillfully captures Sand's poise and intelligence through his engraving technique. The monochrome aesthetic adds depth to this portrait while emphasizing the timeless nature of Sand's legacy. This print serves as a testament to George Sand’s indomitable spirit as an author, feminist icon, and trailblazer for generations to come.
