The portrait, taken by renowned artist Brady, captures Meade's commanding presence and resolute demeanor. Throughout his military career from 1862 to 1867, General Meade fought valiantly for the Union states at significant battles such as Bull Run and Antietam. His exceptional leadership skills led to his promotion as major-general of volunteers after these engagements. He went on to lead troops at Fredericksburg and Chancellorville before being entrusted with command of the Army of the Potomac in 1863. One of Meade's most notable achievements came during the Battle of Gettysburg when he successfully defeated Confederate General Robert E Lee.
