EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases Gaspar Betancourt Cisneros, a prominent figure in Cuban history during the 19th century. Born in Camagueya in 1803, Cisneros made significant contributions to his country's development. In the 1830s, he began publishing notable articles that showcased his intellect and passion for progress. One of his most remarkable achievements was leading the construction of the railway between Puerto Principe and Nuevitas, revolutionizing transportation within Cuba. This image captures him as a distinguished gentleman with a well-groomed beard and white hair, exuding wisdom and authority. Seeking refuge from political turmoil, Cisneros found solace in New York where he continued advocating for Cuban interests. In 1849, he became Vice-president of the Cuban Advice (Council), passionately advocating for annexation. The monochrome portrait reflects both the historical significance of this influential man and the era in which he lived - an emblematic representation of colonialism's impact on North and Central America during that time period. Preserved as a cigar card from "The History of Cuba" this print serves as a testament to Cisneros' enduring legacy. It is an invaluable piece capturing not only one man's journey but also shedding light on Cuba's rich history.
