The Exhibition of Cartoons in Westminster Hall, 1845. Creator: Unknown
The Exhibition of Cartoons in Westminster Hall, 1845. Art show in the medieval hall at the Palace of Westminster in London....a general view of the Hall, the Frescoes of [Daniel] Maclise and [Charles West] Cope in the foreground...this National Exhibition was opened gratuitously to the public, and thousands have since availed themselves of the privilege...The Cartoons, Coloured Sketches, and Frescoes are ranged upon the south wall, and upon the screen raised at a short distance from the north wall...The old walls are literally " gay with life and colour." The Statues are arranged better than last year; the figures of the double line face inwards, having their backs turned to the Cartoons on the walls, so that the Hall is divided into three aisles, and the spectators, in examining the Sculpture, are separated from the greater number who linger by the Cartoons. From " Illustrated London News", 1845, Vol VII

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the grandeur and vibrancy of "The Exhibition of Cartoons in Westminster Hall, 1845". The medieval hall at the Palace of Westminster in London serves as the backdrop for this remarkable art show. In the foreground, we are treated to a splendid view of the exquisite frescoes created by Daniel Maclise and Charles West Cope. This National Exhibition was a true gift to the public, with free access granted to all. Since its opening, thousands have flocked to witness this extraordinary display. The south wall proudly showcases an array of Cartoons, Coloured Sketches, and Frescoes while a screen is raised on the north wall creating an intriguing visual divide. The ancient walls themselves seem rejuvenated as they come alive with vibrant colors and bustling scenes. The statues are thoughtfully arranged this year; their figures face inward towards each other rather than towards the Cartoons on the walls. This clever arrangement creates three distinct aisles within the hall, allowing spectators to explore both sculpture and paintings without overcrowding. As we gaze upon this historic photograph from 1845 sourced from "Illustrated London News" it becomes evident that this exhibition was not just about showcasing art but also about providing an immersive experience for visitors. It is truly a testament to how art can transform spaces and captivate audiences across generations.
