EDITORS COMMENTS
This print titled "Where the Beasts of Prehistory Lurk By the Lake in the Palace Grounds, c1935" takes us back to a time when imagination and scientific knowledge intertwined. The image showcases life-size prehistoric monster sculptures dating from 1854, located in Crystal Palace Park, Sydenham, south London. Created by Benjamin Waterhouse Hawkins under the guidance of renowned paleontologist Sir Richard Owen, these sculptures were based on the latest scientific understanding of prehistoric creatures at that time. However, as we now know through modern advancements in paleontology, some inaccuracies exist within these dinosaur depictions. The photograph captures an eerie yet fascinating scene where these ancient beasts stand tall by the tranquil lake amidst lush surroundings. It transports us to a world long gone but forever preserved through art and history. The Crystal Palace Park serves as both a tourist attraction and a testament to Victorian-era fascination with natural history. This snapshot from "Wonderful London" edited by Arthur St John Adcock offers a glimpse into this unique blend of science and artistry that captivated visitors during the 1930s. As we admire this monochrome masterpiece captured by an unknown creator, let us appreciate how our understanding of prehistory has evolved over time while cherishing these magnificent sculptures that continue to inspire awe and wonder today.
