EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking photograph captures the intricately decorated Armchair of the Marquis De Lafayette, on display at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington D.C., in 1913. The armchair, believed to have once belonged to the French aristocrat and military officer, Gilbert du Motier, Marquis de Lafayette, is a testament to the rich history of transatlantic relations during the American Revolutionary War. The Marquis de Lafayette (1757-1834) was a major general in the Continental Army and a key figure in the American Revolution. Born in France, he arrived in America in 1777 and quickly became an invaluable ally to the American cause. After the war, he returned to France, where he continued to advocate for the American Revolution and its ideals. This Egyptian-style armchair, with its ornate decorations and grandeur, reflects the Marquis's status as a nobleman and military leader. The chair is now part of the Congressional Library's extensive collection and is a popular exhibit for visitors to the Smithsonian. The photograph was taken by Harris & Ewing, a renowned photographic studio based in Washington D.C. The studio, founded by George W. Harris and Martha Ewing Kuntze in 1896, was known for its high-quality glass negatives and its extensive work documenting the nation's capital and its institutions. This photograph, taken in the early 1910s, showcases their exceptional skill in capturing the essence and beauty of the Marquis De Lafayette's Armchair for future generations to appreciate.
