Anne Boleyn (c1504-1536), second wife of Henry VIII of England, c1880
Anne Boleyn (c1504-1536), second wife of Henry VIII of England, c1880. The divorce of Henry VIII from Catherine of Aragon and his subsequent marriage to Anne Boleyn caused a political and religious crisis in England. The Catholic Church refused to annul Henrys marriage to Catherine, resulting in Henry ordering the English Church to break from Rome. Anne provided Henry with a daughter, the future Elizabeth I, but she failed to provide the king with his cherished male heir. As a result Henry had Anne charged with high treason on grounds of adultery. Although the charges were almost certainly fabricated, she was found guilty and beheaded at the Tower of London on 19 May 1536

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the enigmatic beauty of Anne Boleyn, the second wife of King Henry VIII of England. Taken in the late 19th century, it showcases her regal presence and exquisite Tudor fashion. Anne Boleyn's marriage to Henry VIII was a turning point in English history, causing a profound political and religious crisis. The refusal of the Catholic Church to annul Henry's previous marriage led him to break away from Rome, establishing the English Church. Although Anne provided Henry with a daughter who would become Queen Elizabeth I, she failed to produce a male heir that he desired so desperately. This ultimately led to her downfall as she was accused of high treason on false charges of adultery. Despite her tragic fate, this portrait immortalizes Anne as an alluring queen with her elegant dress adorned with jewelry and a fashionable hat. Her gaze reflects both strength and vulnerability, capturing the complexities of her life during this tumultuous period. As we admire this remarkable image today, we are reminded not only of Anne Boleyn's significant role in shaping British history but also of the power struggles within royal marriages that can have far-reaching consequences for nations.
