EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the Monumental Arch in Palmyra, Syria, at sunset, showcasing its grandeur and historical significance. Before the Syrian conflict erupted in 2011, this UNESCO World Heritage Site welcomed over 150,000 tourists annually. The image portrays a stark contrast between the past and present as it reveals signs of deterioration caused by the ongoing crisis. In this tranquil color image taken by Nick Brundle Photography, we witness the architectural marvel of ancient Rome standing tall amidst nature's beauty. The road leading to this magnificent structure beckons travelers to explore its rich history and awe-inspiring architecture. The photograph encapsulates both hope and despair - a symbol of resilience against the backdrop of war-ravaged ruins. As sunlight casts long shadows on the arch, it serves as a reminder of what once was while hinting at what could still be salvaged from this ancient civilization. Palmyra's significance as an international landmark representing diverse cultures is palpable in every detail captured by Brundle's lens. With no people visible within the frame, attention is drawn solely to this large built structure that has withstood centuries. As we gaze upon this breathtaking landscape with its vibrant sky painted by a setting sun, we are reminded not only of our shared human history but also of our responsibility to protect these invaluable treasures for future generations. This photograph stands as a testament to both beauty and destruction – urging us all to appreciate and preserve our world's cultural heritage before it crumbles into rubble under militant groups
