Defeat of the Ottoman Empire in Vienna in 1683: Plan of the siege

The Great Turkish War between the Holy League of European Powers and the Ottoman Empire, also known as the Great Turkish War of Leopold I or the 5th Austrian Turkish War, lasted from 1683 to 1699. Under its new Grand Vizier and Commander-in-Chief Kara Mustafa, the Ottoman Empire tried for the second time in 1683 (after the first Turkish siege of Vienna in 1529) to conquer the imperial city of Vienna and to open the gate to Central Europe. The failure of this siege led to the imperial counter-offensive, in the course of which the Ottomans were expelled from the territory of the Kingdom of Hungary and the tripartite division of Hungary in favor of the Habsburgs came to an end. EDITORS COMMENTS
Caption: "Defeat of the Ottoman Empire in Vienna, 1683: A Glimpse into a Pivotal Moment in History". This print takes us back to one of the most significant turning points in European history - the defeat of the Ottoman Empire during the siege of Vienna in 1683. The Great Turkish War, also known as the 5th Austrian Turkish War, unfolded between the Holy League of European Powers and the formidable Ottomans under their new Grand Vizier and Commander-in-Chief Kara Mustafa. In this detailed illustration from the 19th century, we witness a strategic plan outlining key elements of this historic battle. With ambitions to conquer Vienna for a second time since their initial siege in 1529, Kara Mustafa aimed to establish dominance over Central Europe. However, fate had other plans. The failure of this siege marked a pivotal moment that triggered an imperial counter-offensive by European forces. As a result, not only were the Ottomans expelled from Hungarian territories but it also brought an end to Habsburgs' tripartite division favoring Hungary. This artwork serves as both a historical record and testament to human resilience against seemingly insurmountable odds. It reminds us how pivotal events can shape nations and alter destinies forever. Through its intricate details and rich historical context, this print offers viewers an opportunity to reflect upon past struggles while celebrating triumphs that have shaped our world today. "
