EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the iconic Weston Super Mare Grand Pier against a dramatic, clouded sky. Situated in the charming town of Weston super Mare, this historic pier has a rich and eventful history. Originally built in 1904, it boasted a magnificent 2,000 seat theatre that hosted various forms of entertainment including music hall performances, opera shows, stage plays, and ballets. Unfortunately, tragedy struck in 1930 when the original pavilion was destroyed by fire. However, resilience prevailed as a new pavilion was erected just three years later in 1933. This new structure housed an exciting undercover fun fair that brought joy to visitors for decades to come. In recognition of its architectural significance and cultural value, the pier was granted Grade II listed building status in 1974. But fate had more challenges in store for this beloved landmark when it fell victim to yet another devastating fire in 2008. However, thanks to an impressive £51 million investment and unwavering determination from all involved parties, the Grand Pier triumphantly reopened its doors to the public once again in October 2010. Today, it stands as a testament to human resilience and serves as both a nostalgic reminder of days gone by and an exhilarating destination for locals and tourists alike. Nicholas arah's stunning photograph beautifully encapsulates both the grandeur of this historical site and its enduring spirit throughout time.
