EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases James Graham, Marquis of Montrose, a prominent figure in Scottish history during the 17th century. Created by A. Matham around 1644-50, this engraving captures the essence of Montrose's noble and military persona. Montrose began his journey as a supporter of the Covenanters in the Wars of the Three Kingdoms but later switched sides to support King Charles I as the English Civil War unfolded. Known as "the Great Montrose" in Scotland, he fought valiantly for the king from 1644 to 1646 and again in 1650 during a civil war that ravaged his homeland. In this half-length portrait, we see Montrose portrayed with an air of authority and strength. His moustache and long hair add to his distinguished appearance while his armor symbolizes his role as a military leader. The coat of arms and insignia proudly displayed on his breastplate further emphasize his aristocratic status. The inscription beneath him reads: "James Marquesse of Monstrose, Earle of Kingcairne, Lord Graeme, Baron of Mont dieu" highlighting some of his prestigious titles within Scottish nobility. It also mentions that he served as Lieutenant Governor and Captain General for His Majesty in Scotland. This remarkable print not only immortalizes James Graham's physical likeness but also serves as a reminder of his significant contributions during tumultuous times. As we gaze upon this piece from our private collection today, we are transported back to an era when loyalty was tested and alliances were forged amidst political turmoil.
