EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a detailed section of the back of the center panel from a Byzantine Triptych icon. Measuring 12x11.6x0.9 cm, this exquisite ivory carving is housed in the prestigious Walters Art Museum in Baltimore, USA. Although time has faded its once vibrant colors, faint traces of pigment and gold can still be discerned on this triptych. The careful craftsmanship and intricate relief carving are evident even in its current state. Interestingly, it appears that this triptych has undergone some alterations over the years. The panels have been cut down at some point, resulting in misalignment between the wings and central section. This suggests that two separate pieces may have been joined together to create this unique object. The subject matter depicted on this triptych is deeply religious, featuring the Virgin Mary with her child Jesus Christ surrounded by saints. Known as Hodegetria, or "She who shows the Way". Mary holds baby Jesus tenderly while pointing towards him as if guiding believers towards salvation. This medieval sculpture serves as a powerful testament to both artistic skill and spiritual devotion during Byzantine times. Its delicate beauty continues to captivate viewers today, offering a glimpse into an ancient world filled with faith and reverence for sacred icons like these.
