EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the lively atmosphere of Southwark Fair in 1733, as illustrated by the renowned artist William Hogarth. The image is a hand-coloured engraving from his collection "Hogarth Restored" re-engraved by Thomas Cook and published in 1812. The scene depicts a bustling city square filled with actors, social gatherings, and an enthusiastic crowd. Amidst the vibrant chaos, we witness a dramatic moment as a drummer collapses and falls to the ground. The Union Jack flag proudly waves above him while a nearby church tower stands tall against the backdrop of festivity. Southwark Fair was held annually for two weeks in September until its abolition in 1762. This historical event served as an important gathering place for Londoners to revel in entertainment and merriment. The fair featured various attractions such as theaters, stages, pipers, and countless stalls offering delights to visitors. Through this enchanting engraving, Hogarth masterfully captures both the excitement and unpredictability of such festivities. It serves as a window into London's past where people from all walks of life came together to celebrate joyously. This particular print is part of The Stapleton Collection housed within a private collection today. Its inclusion in Fine Art Finder allows us to appreciate Hogarth's skillful portrayal of this significant cultural event that has long since faded into history but remains immortalized through art.
