Barrack Square, 78th Highlanders, Kandahar, 1880 circa (b / w photo)

5920016 Barrack Square, 78th Highlanders, Kandahar, 1880 circa (b/w photo) by Simpson, Benjamin (1831-1923); National Army Museum, London; (add.info.: Barrack Square, 78th Highlanders, Kandahar, 1880 circa.
Photograph by Benjamin Simpson (1831-1923), 2nd Afghan War (1878-1880), 1880 circa.
The 78th arrived at Bombay on 19 March 1879 and after a spending over a year at a variety of Indian stations it was ordered to proceed to Afghanistan via Quetta and the Bolan Pass in July 1880. On arrival in southern Afghanistan in November 1880 the 78th were attached to Brigadier-General Browns 2nd Brigade at Kandahar. The city had recently been relieved by Major-General Frederick Roberts field force and the campaign was effectively over by the time they arrived. Nevertheless, such was the severity of the weather and the trying nature of the climate generally, that 230 out of a total of 757 officers and men had been invalided back to the depot at Poona by the time the 78th began the return journey to India in April 1881.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the historic Barrack Square in Kandahar, Afghanistan, circa 1880. Taken by Benjamin Simpson during the 2nd Afghan War, this image showcases the presence of the 78th Highlanders in a foreign land. The 78th Highlanders arrived in Bombay on March 19,1879, and after spending over a year at various Indian stations, they were ordered to proceed to Afghanistan via Quetta and the Bolan Pass in July 1880. By November of that year, they were attached to Brigadier-General Brown's 2nd Brigade at Kandahar. Although Major-General Frederick Roberts had already relieved the city before their arrival, the harsh weather conditions and challenging climate took its toll on the soldiers. In fact, by April 1881 when they began their return journey to India, around one-third of their total strength had been invalided back due to illness or injury. This photograph is part of an album containing a collection of thirty-four images from this significant period in history. Preserved by the National Army Museum in London, it serves as a testament to both the bravery and hardships faced by those who served during this campaign. With its timeless quality captured through photography techniques, this print offers viewers a glimpse into an important chapter not only for military history but also for understanding cultural interactions between nations during times of conflict.
