This print showcases an exquisite illustration from "The Book of Simple Medicines" by Mattheaus Platearius, dating back to the 15th century. Created on vellum by the talented artist Robinet Testard, this artwork measures 26x35.5 cm and is currently housed in the National Library in St. Petersburg, Russia. Believed to have been made for Louise of Savoy, wife of Charles of Angouleme, this medieval manuscript holds a wealth of knowledge about herbal remedies and their healing properties. The intricate details within the illustration are truly mesmerizing. In the top left corner, we see Convallaria majalis or lily of the valley, known for its curative powers. On the bottom left side are Euphorbia lathyris and Euphorbia myrsinites, commonly referred to as tithymalus lathyris and garden spurge respectively. These plants were highly valued for their medicinal qualities. Moving towards the bottom right corner, Aquilegia vulgaris or columbine takes center stage with its vibrant blue and white petals.
