EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a large pair of library globes, the terrestrial and celestial, created by Willem Janszoon Blaeu in Amsterdam during the 17th century. The terrestrial globe, crafted between 1645 and 1648, features thirty-six hand-colored engraved half gores pasted onto a plaster sphere. It boasts intricate details such as inscribed cartouches, graduated equator and meridian lines labeled every ten degrees, and vividly colored tropics and polar regions. The seas are adorned with ships, sea monsters, wind-roses, and shipping routes while the continents display mountains, rivers, towns named in Latin along with fascinating creatures. The celestial globe is equally impressive with twelve hand-colored engraved half gores depicting constellations following Mercator's style. Each degree on the equatorial line is divided into thirds while the ecliptic displays individual days of the houses of Zodiac labeled every ten days. Stars categorized to six levels of magnitude shimmer in gold paint against a dark backdrop. Both globes rest on Dutch-style stands featuring turned baluster supports above circular bases with cross-stretchers and bun feet. A later black painted iron meridian holds each globe securely while hand-colored engraved horizons provide additional astronomical information. Standing at an impressive height of 99 cm. , these extraordinary globes offer a glimpse into centuries-old cartography techniques combined with artistic flair. Their historical significance lies not only in their accuracy but also in their representation of geographical knowledge during that era. This print captures their beauty for all to admire.
