Bewick liked this large oil painting of himself, calling it a grand portrait. On the table behind him are copies his books. He holds a graver, the tool of his craft, in his hand. The dog beside him belonged to his friend, the bookseller Emerson Charnley. The picture was painted by Bewicks friend, the Newcastle artist William Nicholson.
