Drawing from the antique: Cast of a faun, 1901 or 1904 (charcoal on paper)

5648389 Drawing from the antique: Cast of a faun, 1901 or 1904 (charcoal on paper) by Valette, Adolphe (1876-1942); 61x45.5 cm; Manchester Art Gallery, UK; (add.info.: Valette had a precocious talent for drawing and won many prizes while still a student. This detailed and highly finished drawing was typical of academic art school training. Its indistinct date of 1904 suggests it may belong to his period of study in Bordeaux. That year Valette won the travelling scholarship which enabled him to come to England. Valette's exquisite drawing is a copy of a plaster cast of an antique marble of the god of shepherds, Pan. His identity is indicated by the seven reeded flute held in the right hand and by two horns on his head. Sometimes Pan is also shown with goat's ears and legs like the fauns, other mythological woodland beings with whom this god is often associated.); © Manchester Art Gallery

Created in either 1901 or 1904, this masterpiece measures 61x45.5 cm and is housed at the prestigious Manchester Art Gallery in the UK. Valette, known for his exceptional talent even as a student, produced this highly detailed and meticulously finished artwork during his academic training. The uncertain date suggests that it may have been created during his period of study in Bordeaux before he won a scholarship to travel to England. The drawing itself is an exquisite reproduction of a plaster cast depicting Pan, the god of shepherds. Pan's identity is evident through the seven reeded flute held delicately in his right hand and two horns adorning his head. Often associated with mythological woodland creatures like fauns, Pan is sometimes depicted with goat's ears and legs. This particular piece beautifully captures the essence of classical mythology while showcasing Valette's technical prowess as an artist. The subject's bare form exudes both strength and grace, further emphasizing its timeless appeal. With its rich historical context and masterful execution, this drawing serves as a testament to Valette's skillful interpretation of classical themes within contemporary artistry.
