EDITORS COMMENTS
The haunting image captures a grim scene from America's pioneer days. In this print titled "Finding the Body of One of their Companions, Scalped and Horribly Mangled" artist F. H. Wellington brings to life the harsh realities faced by settlers on the frontier. Engraved by Howard Pyle for his book "On the Outposts - 1780" published in Harpers Magazine in 1888, this lithograph evokes a sense of dread and sorrow. The composition depicts a group of pioneers discovering the lifeless body of one of their companions who has fallen victim to a brutal attack by Native American Indians. The gruesome aftermath is vividly portrayed as the victim's scalp hangs grotesquely from his head, while his body bears signs of savage mutilation. This artwork exemplifies Pyle's mastery in capturing historical events with great attention to detail and emotional impact. Known as one of the leading figures in the Brandywine School, Pyle was celebrated for his ability to transport viewers back in time through his illustrations. As we gaze upon this print, we are reminded not only of the dangers faced by early settlers but also of our shared history and its complexities. It serves as a poignant reminder that progress often comes at great cost and that understanding our past is essential for shaping our future.
