EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a stunning coat from the late 17th century, dating between 1685 and 1695. The English School masterpiece is currently housed at the Manchester Art Gallery in the UK. Made of a luxurious silk and wool blend fabric, this brown coat exudes elegance and sophistication. The attention to detail is impeccable, with a high round neck adorned with delicate silk braid binding. The front opening boasts an impressive display of 30 buttons and buttonholes, while the bottom eight remain uncut, adding an intriguing touch. Elbow-length sleeves are divided into two sections, widening below the elbow on the outer arm. A turn-back cuff falls gracefully below each sleeve, featuring irregular pleating parallel to the arm. This exquisite detail is further enhanced by braiding and six decorative buttons along its upper edge. The four flared sections of the skirt open from waist sides but are caught at their base for added structure. Three buttons and false buttonholes adorn the top of this opening while fifteen more embellish the back opening. Additional features include pockets on each side of the skirt front with vertical slits beneath pocket flaps that boast central box pleats. These slits are secured by seven buttons on each side along with three more along their bottom edges. An inner belt made of fawn silk adds a pop of color to this magnificent piece; it fastens in front using three silver thread buttons and is trimmed with elegant silver fringe. Associated with Chetham's Library in Manchester, it is believed that this extraordinary coat may have belonged to its Headmaster during that time period.
