In 1669 Captain John Kempthorne, in HM fourth-rate Mary Rose, was escorting a convoy through the pirate-infested waters near Trafalgar, when he encountered the main Algerine squadron of seven corsair ships, each more powerful than his. He fought them for hours, repaired his battered ship through the night, and in the morning resumed the fight until they were glad enough to run. Kempthorne was knighted by Charles II for this gallant action. A picture of the fight in Greenwich Hospital bears the inscription: Two we burnt, and two we sank, and two did run away, And one we carried to Leghorn Roads to show we'd won the day.
