by Egyptian, Byzantine Period, (5th century); h:107.00 w:55.00 cm; Cleveland Museum of Art, OH, USA; (add.info.: This is the bottom section of a well-woven wool unisex tunic. Various stylized animals and possibly radial baskets in roundels decorate the hem band with round finials bearing birds and the two square panels, woven in tapestry weave. Extra wefts enrich the animals and the deep blue ground, probably a failed purple dye. The woolen fringe was added across the bottom.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the lower section of a tunic from the 5th century, during the Byzantine Period in Egypt. The tapestry weave with supplementary weft wrapping technique brings to life an intricate design featuring stylized animals and radial baskets adorning the hem band. Round finials adorned with birds and two square panels woven in tapestry weave add further detail to this remarkable piece. The use of un-dyed linen and dyed wool creates a striking contrast, with deep blue ground likely representing a failed purple dye attempt. Extra wefts are skillfully incorporated to enhance both the animals and the background, resulting in a visually rich composition. Adding to its allure is a woolen fringe that elegantly graces the bottom edge of this well-woven unisex tunic. This artifact not only serves as a testament to ancient Egyptian craftsmanship but also offers insight into their fashion sensibilities. Preserved at the Cleveland Museum of Art in Ohio, USA, this exquisite textile was generously gifted by William E. Ward in memory of his wife Evelyn Svec Ward. Its presence within their collection allows us to appreciate and admire this extraordinary example of ancient Egyptian artistry for generations to come.
