A Hot Day, 1876

EDITORS COMMENTS
is a captivating etching by Edwin Austin Forbes that transports us back to the scorching heat of the American Civil War. This print, part of the Gilder Lehrman Collection in New York, captures a group of soldiers seeking respite from the sweltering weather. In the upper left corner, we see them huddled around a gun in position, their tired bodies finding solace under a makeshift shelter. The etching also offers glimpses into other aspects of military life during this tumultuous time. In the upper right image titled "Beef Steak Rare" we encounter a grizzled soldier cooking his meal over an open fire with utmost resourcefulness. The bottom left image portrays a straggler – always conveniently ill when danger looms – with his knapsack hanging from his rifle. Moving to the lower middle section, we witness a cavalryman taking advantage of a momentary calm on skirmish lines as he smokes his pipe and gazes into the distance while his horse grazes peacefully nearby. Finally, in the lower left corner titled "A Cavalry Orderly Waiting Orders". Forbes depicts another soldier patiently holding onto his horse's reins as they await instructions. Forbes' masterful etching not only showcases scenes from daily life during war but also highlights themes of camaraderie and endurance amidst challenging circumstances. It serves as both an artistic testament to history and an invitation for viewers to reflect upon those who fought bravely during one of America's most defining moments.
