EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases Kirtling Tower, a historic Tudor castle located in Cambridgeshire, England. The engraving, created by Alexander Francis Lydon and later reproduced by Benjamin Fawcett using the Baxter process, beautifully captures the external view of this architectural gem. Built for Edward North, 1st Baron North, by Richard Rich, 1st Baron Rich in the early 16th century, Kirtling Tower was unfortunately demolished in 1801. However, one part of this magnificent structure managed to survive - the castellated tower that stands tall and proud to this day. The image transports us back to the enchanting era of the late 19th century when Reverend Francis Orpen Morriss compiled his picturesque views of notable British landmarks. This particular illustration is featured in his renowned publication titled "A Series of Picturesque Views of the Seats of Noblemen and Gentlemen of Great Britain and Ireland". Through its intricate details and vibrant colors achieved through woodblock printing techniques, this artwork allows us to appreciate both the grandeur and historical significance of Kirtling Tower. Its inclusion in private collections speaks volumes about its enduring appeal as a symbol of British heritage. As we gaze upon this remarkable piece from Bridgeman Images' Fine Art Finder collection, we are reminded not only of our rich architectural past but also how art can transport us across time and immerse us in different eras with just one glance.
