EDITORS COMMENTS
This print of "Icarus" takes us back to the ancient Greek legend, where Daedalus and his son Icarus attempt to escape their imprisonment on the island of Crete. In this visually stunning image, we witness Icarus soaring through the sky with wings made of feathers and wax, a creation by his ingenious father. However, Daedalus warns him not to fly too close to the sun. Yet, intoxicated by the exhilaration of flight, Icarus disregards his father's cautionary words and continues ascending higher into the heavens. As he reaches unprecedented heights, tragedy strikes - the scorching rays of sunlight melt away the delicate wax holding his wings together. Helplessly plummeting towards Earth's vast expanse of water below, Icarus meets a tragic end as he drowns in its depths. The inspiration for this particular artwork stems from an 18th-century engraving by Hubert Quellinus that was derived from a relief found in Amsterdam's Bankruptcy Chamber. Interestingly enough, this relief served as a symbolic reminder for investors to exercise prudence and avoid taking excessive risks - much like how Icarus' tale teaches us about hubris and overambition. As we gaze upon this mesmerizing print capturing both beauty and sorrow simultaneously, it serves as a timeless reminder for all individuals to heed caution when reaching for great heights or pursuing lofty ambitions – lest they suffer a fate akin to that which befell poor Icarus himself.
