Fencing - 1992 Barcelona Olympics - Mens Epee Team, Semi-Final: Unified Team vs. West Germany
Pavel Kolobkov (Unified Team) vs. Arnd Schmitt (West Germany)
Kolobkov (#83) at the Palace of Metallurgy.
Unified Team was the name used for the sports team of the former Soviet Union/Russia (except the Baltic states).
Kolobkov was appointed Russian Minister of Sport in October 2016. His predecessor Vitaly Mutko had been implicated in the state-sponsored doping detailed in the World Anti-Doping Agencys (WADA) Independent Commission. Kolobkov himself, as Deputy Sports Minister, had been barred from Wadas Foundation Board due to Russian Anti-Doping Agency (RUSADA) being declared non-compliant with the WADA code.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a momentous clash during the men's epee team semi-final at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics. The Unified Team, representing the former Soviet Union/Russia (excluding the Baltic states), faced off against West Germany in an intense fencing match. Pavel Kolobkov, donning jersey number 83, fiercely engages with Arnd Schmitt from West Germany at the iconic Palace of Metallurgy. Beyond his remarkable sporting achievements, Kolobkov's story takes on a new dimension. In October 2016, he assumed the role of Russian Minister of Sport following his predecessor Vitaly Mutko's implication in state-sponsored doping revealed by WADA's Independent Commission. Interestingly, as Deputy Sports Minister at that time, Kolobkov himself was barred from WADA's Foundation Board due to RUSADA being declared non-compliant with anti-doping regulations. This photograph not only encapsulates a thrilling Olympic encounter but also serves as a reminder of the complex and controversial issues surrounding sports governance and integrity. Colorsport Images has masterfully captured this historic moment for posterity without any commercial intentions or affiliations.
