EDITORS COMMENTS
The print captures the majestic HMS Implacable, a fleet aircraft carrier that was built by Fairfield at Govan and completed in 1944. This formidable vessel played a crucial role during World War II, serving in both Home and Norwegian waters before venturing into the Pacific for strikes on Japan. With her sleek design and powerful presence, she epitomized British naval strength. After the war, HMS Implacable entered a period of reserve until 1949 when she once again took to the seas as the Flagship of the Home Fleet. Her distinguished service continued as she assumed command as Flagship of the Training Squadron until 1954. Throughout these years, this remarkable ship trained countless sailors who would go on to serve their country with honor. Sadly, despite her illustrious history and unwavering dedication to duty, HMS Implacable met an unfortunate fate. In 1955, she was sold for scrap—a somber end for such a storied vessel that had witnessed pivotal moments in history. This print serves as a poignant reminder of not only the technological advancements achieved by armed forces but also pays tribute to all those who served aboard this iconic aircraft carrier. It is through images like these that we can appreciate and remember their sacrifices made in defense of our nations' freedom.
