Chimfunshi Chimp Reserve, Zambia, Africa
Pan troglodytes
Chimfunshi Chimp Reserve is recognised as the worlds largest dedicated sanctuary for orphaned chimps. As chimpanzees are not indigenous to Zambia it is not possible to free-release them locally, therefore 2, 000 acres of forest land has been designated to the chimps.

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photograph, a chimpanzee (Pan troglodytes) sits perched on a tree branch, engaging in a vital form of communication within its community. The chimpanzee, a resident of Chimfunshi Chimp Reserve in Zambia, Africa, is known for its distinctive pant-hoot or calling vocalization. Chimfunshi Chimp Reserve is the world's largest dedicated sanctuary for orphaned chimpanzees, providing a safe haven for over 2,000 acres of forest land. As chimpanzees are not native to Zambia, they cannot be released into the wild locally. Instead, this expansive reserve offers these primates a second chance at life, providing them with the opportunity to live in social groups, forage for food, and engage in natural behaviors. In this moment, the chimpanzee's lips are parted, revealing its teeth, as it lets out a powerful pant-hoot call. This vocalization serves multiple purposes, including establishing dominance, reuniting family members, and warning others of potential threats. The intricate vocalizations of chimpanzees are a testament to their advanced communication skills, making them one of the most intelligent primate species. This photograph captures the raw beauty and complexity of these remarkable creatures, inviting us to appreciate their unique place in the natural world.
