Us-Earths Moon
This 09 December, 1990 color image of the Moon was taken by NASAs Galileo spacecraft at a range of about 350, 000 miles. At the upper right is the large, dark Oceanus Procellarum; below it is the smaller Mare Humorum. These, like the small dark Mare Orientale in the center of the basin, formed over 3 billion years ago as basaltic lava flows. At the lower left, among the southern cratered highlands of the far side, is the South-Pole-Aitken basin, similar to Orientale but twice as great in diameter and much older and more degraded by cratering and weathering. The cratered highlands of the near and far sides and the Maria are covered with scattered bright, young ray craters. AFP PHOTO/ NASA / AFP PHOTO / NASA / NASA

EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning print captures the ethereal beauty of Earth's moon, taken by NASA's Galileo spacecraft on 9th December 1990. From a distance of approximately 350,000 miles, this color image reveals intricate details and features that have fascinated humanity for centuries. In the upper right corner, we are drawn to the vast expanse of Oceanus Procellarum, a dark region resembling an ocean. Just below it lies Mare Humorum, a smaller yet equally captivating lunar sea. These ancient formations were born over three billion years ago when molten basaltic lava flowed across the moon's surface. At the center of the basin rests Mare Orientale, another dark mare surrounded by numerous craters. This remarkable feature formed around the same time as its counterparts but is twice their size and has endured more extensive weathering and cratering throughout its existence. Moving towards the lower left side of this mesmerizing image unveils South-Pole-Aitken basin nestled among southern cratered highlands on the far side of our celestial neighbor. Comparable to Mare Orientale in structure but significantly larger in diameter, this basin exhibits signs of extreme age and degradation due to relentless impacts from space debris. Both near and far sides showcase heavily cratered highlands alongside Maria regions adorned with scattered bright ray craters - evidence of recent geological activity on our moon. This awe-inspiring photograph serves as a testament to NASA's tireless exploration efforts while reminding us all of our enduring fascination with space and its
