The mascot of Worthing Sea Cadets Band is 7 year old Leonard Banbridge

The mascot of Worthing Sea Cadets Band is 7 year old Leonard Banbridge.
For six months, little Len of Penfold Road, Worthing, son of a stoker now at sea, followed the cadets round everywhere they went.
They all liked him and made a fuss of him. Then one day his uncle, also a Navy man, thought
his nephew looked rather out of place among the sailors, so he made Len the uniform of an Able Seaman, complete with lanyard, bell bottom white cap with black chin strap and toy bugle.
After that Len became the official mascot of the band and accompanied them on all their outings.
Here he is pictured ushering in alongside the tall drum major, the rally of the Womens Land Army of West Sussex at Arundel castle.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This heartwarming photo captures the innocence and bravery of 7-year-old Leonard Banbridge, the beloved mascot of Worthing Sea Cadets Band. For half a year, young Len shadowed the cadets wherever they went, endearing himself to all with his infectious spirit. Recognizing that he stood out among the sailors, Len's uncle, a Navy man himself, decided to outfit him in an authentic Able Seaman uniform - complete with a lanyard, bell-bottom white cap adorned with a black chin strap, and even a toy bugle. From that moment on, Len became an integral part of the band as their official mascot. He accompanied them on every outing and brought joy to everyone he encountered along the way. In this particular photograph captured on May 10th, 1943 at Arundel Castle in West Sussex, Len is seen proudly ushering alongside the tall drum major during a rally for the Women's Land Army. This image not only symbolizes unity between different branches of service but also showcases how war can bring people together despite their age differences. It serves as a poignant reminder of how children like Len played their own unique role during World War II - bringing smiles to faces amidst times of conflict and uncertainty. Preserved by Sayers from Memory Lane Prints, this snapshot immortalizes one boy's extraordinary journey within an extraordinary time in history.
