British Royal Navy submarine HMS Shakespeare, of the East Indies fleet
British Royal Navy submarine HMS Shakespeare, of the East Indies fleet, returned to harbour with a gaping hole in her sides having fought one of the most arduous battles of the submarine war.
In the course of the battle she sank a medium sized Japanese merchant ship, fought off 25 air attacks by Japanese planes, shot down one of the planes and damaged at least four others.
A shell from the merchantmans 12 pounder gun fire tore a hole in the pressure hull and water poured into the engine room, whereupon petty officer telegraphist V.C. Harmer and leading telegraphist Kenneth Wade clambered out of the conning tower and began to plug the hole with blankets and hammocks. Four more shells ripped into the submarine, the blast from one of them blowing off petty officer harmers boots. Later petty officer harmer went to the bridge and kept up a steady fire on the planes with his tommy gun, while petty officer Jones shot down one of them with his vickers gun. I
n the end the crippled submarine was taken in tow by a sister submarine.

Heroic Battle - HMS Shakespeare Returns to Harbor After Intense Submarine War
EDITORS COMMENTS
. This print captures the indomitable spirit of the British Royal Navy submarine, HMS Shakespeare, as it returns to harbor with battle scars that tell a remarkable tale. Serving in the East Indies fleet during World War II, this valiant vessel endured one of the most grueling battles of the submarine war. In an extraordinary display of bravery and resilience, HMS Shakespeare sank a medium-sized Japanese merchant ship while fending off relentless air attacks by 25 Japanese planes. Amidst the chaos, a shell from the enemy's gun tore through her pressure hull, causing water to flood into her engine room. Undeterred by imminent danger, Petty Officer Telegraphist V. C. Harmer and Leading Telegraphist Kenneth Wade fearlessly emerged from the conning tower to plug the gaping hole with blankets and hammocks. Despite enduring four more devastating shell hits – one even blowing off Harmer's boots – their determination remained unyielding. With unwavering resolve, Petty Officer Harmer took position on the bridge armed with his trusty tommy gun while Petty Officer Jones skillfully shot down one enemy plane using his Vickers gun. Eventually crippled beyond repair, HMS Shakespeare was rescued by a sister submarine that towed her back to safety. This poignant image showcases not only the physical damage inflicted upon this gallant vessel but also serves as a testament to its crew's unwavering courage and camaraderie amidst unimaginable adversity. It stands as a tribute to those who fought tirelessly for freedom during this historic period in naval warfare history.
