On the night of 29th - 30th April 1944, RAF Bombers
attacked the Clermont Ferrand / Aulnat Airfield in German occupied France.
The next day April 30th, USaF Day bombers followed
up the attack with a second blow. So accurate was the bombing that, out of the many buildings and hangers in the south-east corner of the airfield (including the Atelier Industriels de L Air), only the sick bay was undamaged
Two very large hangers collapsed and nine others were severely damaged.
Extensive damage was done to main workshop and offices and 40 smaller buildings stand roofless or totally
destroyed. The railway Station area and tracks were
left pitted with craters. Tarmac and runways were
obliterated at many points and about 11 craters were
seen in the northern half of the landing ground.
At least 7 damaged Oplanes were counted nearby.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a significant moment in history, showcasing the aftermath of a relentless bombardment on the night of April 29th-30th, 1944. RAF Bombers courageously targeted the Clermont Ferrand / Aulnat Airfield in German occupied France, unleashing their might upon enemy forces. The following day, April 30th, USAF Day bombers joined the assault with devastating precision. The image reveals the astonishing accuracy of these bombings as only one building remained unscathed amidst the destruction that befell numerous structures and hangars in the airfield's southeast corner. Two colossal hangars collapsed under the weight of devastation while nine others suffered severe damage. The main workshop and offices were extensively impacted, leaving them barely recognizable. Additionally, forty smaller buildings now stood roofless or lay completely destroyed. Evidence of this fierce attack extended beyond mere infrastructure damage; craters pockmarked both railway station areas and tracks alike. Tarmac and runways bore scars from multiple obliterations throughout various sections while eleven craters marred the northern half of the landing ground. Furthermore, nearby lay at least seven damaged planes—testaments to both sides' ferocity during this intense conflict. This poignant photograph showcases a section of Clermont Ferrand Aulnat Airfield before it fell victim to wartime devastation—a stark reminder of those tumultuous times etched forever into our collective memory.
