On the night of 29th - 30th April 1944, RAF Bombers
attacked the Clermont Ferrand/Aulnat Airfield in German occupied France.
The next day April 30th, USaF Day bombers followed
up the attack with a second blow. So accurate was the bombing that, out of the many buildings and
hangers in the south-east corner of the airfield
(including the Atelier Industriels de L Air), only
the sick bay was undamaged
Two very large hangers collapsed and nine others were severely damaged.
Extensive damage was done to main workshop and offices and 40 smaller buildings stand roofless or totally
destroyed. The railway Station area and tracks were
left pitted with craters. Tarmac and runways were
obliterated at many points and about 11 craters were
seen in the northern half of the landing ground.
At least 7 damaged planes were counted nearby.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a significant moment in history, specifically the night of April 29th - 30th, 1944. RAF Bombers courageously launched an attack on the Clermont Ferrand/Aulnat Airfield in German-occupied France during World War II. The following day, April 30th, USAF Day bombers joined forces to deliver a second blow to the enemy. The precision and accuracy of the bombing campaign were truly remarkable. Despite numerous buildings and hangars scattered throughout the airfield's southeast corner, only one structure remained unscathed—the sick bay. The devastating impact of this assault caused two massive hangars to collapse while severely damaging nine others. Additionally, extensive destruction was inflicted upon the main workshop and offices, leaving them in ruins. Approximately 40 smaller buildings stood roofless or completely destroyed as a result. The railway station area and tracks suffered from countless craters that scarred their surface indefinitely. Tarmac and runways were obliterated at multiple points across the airfield landscape, with around eleven craters visible in its northern half alone. Nearby wreckage revealed at least seven damaged planes left behind by this relentless bombardment. In this powerful image captured during the attack on April 30th, we witness a Lancaster bomber from RAF Bomber Command streaking over its target with unwavering determination. This photograph serves as a poignant reminder of the bravery exhibited by these pilots who risked their lives for freedom during one of history's darkest chapters.
