Mr Fred McArdell who has been poultry farming on the Orkneys for the past 6 years used to find quite a lot of time on his hands, so he made himself a motor car. He has made every part himself except the 350cc motor cycle engine and tyres, at a cost of 3 pounds 15 shillings. It cruises at 50 miles an hour and does 65 miles to the gallon. While stationed on the Orkneys during the war Mr McArdell built himself a cottage and after he left the Navy he returned to the Orkneys to fulfill his idea to start a poultry farm. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the ingenuity and resourcefulness of Mr Fred McArdell, a poultry farmer from Orkneys. In an era where time seemed abundant, Mr McArdell embarked on a remarkable project - building his very own motor car. With meticulous craftsmanship, he single-handedly constructed every part of the vehicle except for the 350cc motorcycle engine and tires. The cost? A mere 3 pounds 15 shillings. With its sleek design and open-top allure, this homemade marvel cruises at an impressive speed of 50 miles per hour while boasting an incredible fuel efficiency of 65 miles to the gallon. As we see in the image, Mr McArdell is removing the driving wheel before entering or exiting his creation – a minor inconvenience when faced with traffic jams. Mr McArdell's inventive spirit extends beyond automobiles; during his time stationed on Orkneys during World War II, he built himself a cottage as well. After leaving the Navy, he returned to fulfill his dream of starting a poultry farm amidst these picturesque Scottish islands. Taken on October 9th, 1951, this photograph serves as both a testament to human creativity and resilience in post-war Britain and a reminder that even in remote corners like Orkneys, dreams can be realized through determination and skillful craftsmanship.
