Preparing the Watercress Harvest - Battling Drought in Watford

EDITORS COMMENTS
. In this print captured by Bernard Alfieri in March 1934, we witness a snapshot of resilience amidst challenging times. The photo showcases a group of hardworking individuals, both men and women, laden with bountiful watercress harvest as they make their way towards the packing sheds at Cassio Bridge in Watford, Hertfordshire. During this era, watercress beds across the country were grappling with the adverse effects of an ongoing drought. However, against all odds, these fortunate series of beds at Cassio Bridge managed to escape its ravages. Their perseverance and dedication shine through as they triumphantly gather their precious crop for transportation to bustling London markets. Watercress is known for its delicate nature and requires a "bath" within its watery bed to thrive during summer months. Yet despite the challenges posed by Mother Nature herself, these resilient workers have ensured that this year's harvest remains unaffected. Bernard Alfieri's photograph not only captures a moment frozen in time but also serves as a testament to human determination and adaptability. It reminds us that even when faced with adversity, communities can come together to overcome obstacles and preserve cherished traditions like watercress farming. This image from Memory Lane Prints transports us back to an era where hard work was essential for survival while showcasing the beauty found within everyday agricultural practices.
