A new landmark in the history of Clevelands health service was reached at

A new landmark in the history of Clevelands health service was reached at the weekend. It was a time for celebration at the new South Cleveland Hospital as the first in-patients arrived on Saturday. But the day was tinged with sadness as North Ormesby Hospital closed its doors for the last time. Telephonist Miss Rose Walker, 54, was chosen to ceremonially close the foots as she is the longest serving staff member - 37 years at the hospital. First patient through the doors of the new hospital was 53-year-old Shiela Kirton, who was presented with flowers by staff nurse Maureen Murphy and a certificate as the hospitals first patient. 26th September 1981

A Historic Milestone in Cleveland's Healthcare - The Inauguration of South Cleveland Hospital

EDITORS COMMENTS
. In a momentous event that marked a new chapter in the annals of Cleveland's health service, the weekend witnessed an extraordinary milestone. Amidst jubilation and cheer, the doors of South Cleveland Hospital swung open to welcome its first cohort of patients on Saturday. However, this joyous occasion was tinged with melancholy as North Ormesby Hospital bid farewell to its final day of operation. Symbolizing the end of an era, Miss Rose Walker, a dedicated telephonist who had served at North Ormesby for an impressive 37 years, was bestowed with the honor of ceremonially closing its doors. Her commitment and loyalty were recognized by her colleagues who entrusted her with this poignant task. Stepping into history as South Cleveland Hospital's inaugural patient was Shiela Kirton, aged 53. Greeted by staff nurse Maureen Murphy bearing vibrant flowers and accompanied by applause from hospital personnel, Shiela received not only floral tokens but also a certificate commemorating her status as the hospital's very first patient. This photograph captures both celebration and nostalgia; it encapsulates a significant juncture where progress intertwines with sentimentality. It serves as a testament to the dedication and compassion exhibited by healthcare professionals who tirelessly strive to provide exceptional care within their communities.
