Mayoral lamp at Darlington. The special lamp outside the Mayor of Darlington
Mayoral lamp at Darlington. The special lamp outside the Mayor of Darlingtons house in Oakdene Avenue, complete with coat of arms and the word Mayor on the glass. The post and lamp is differently constructed to the ordinary lamp. Upon enquiring why the lamp was put there the reply was " The gas company have the privilege of putting the special lamp outside the Mayors house, free of charge. That is if the Mayor desires it". 11th February 1935

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the essence of a bygone era in Darlington, County Durham. Standing tall outside the Mayor of Darlington's residence on Oakdene Avenue is the majestic Mayoral lamp, adorned with a beautifully crafted coat of arms and the word "Mayor" etched onto its glass surface. This lamp, unlike its ordinary counterparts, boasts a unique construction that sets it apart from the rest. The significance behind this special lamp piqued curiosity among locals who wondered why it was placed there. Upon inquiry, it was revealed that the gas company had bestowed upon them an extraordinary privilege - to install this exquisite lamp outside the Mayor's house completely free of charge. However, whether or not this honor would be accepted rested solely on the desires of each incumbent Mayor. Transporting us back to February 11th, 1935, this photograph encapsulates both history and charm. The man in view seems captivated by his surroundings as he gazes at this remarkable sight while leaning against his trusty bicycle nearby. It serves as a reminder of simpler times when bicycles were a common mode of transportation on these streets. Preserving snippets from Britain's past, Memory Lane Prints allows us to relish in nostalgia through their collection. Freddie Reed has skillfully captured this moment in time for all to appreciate – an emblematic symbol representing community pride and tradition within Darlington's rich heritage.
