EDITORS COMMENTS
In this print from Memory Lane Prints, we are transported back to the 1980s where a true love romance and an engrossing sport took hold of the Stockton community. The image showcases a young bookworm named Julie Smith, who couldn't bear to part with her beloved romance novel for a staggering 22 years. Her dedication to the story is evident in her beaming smile as she returns it during the recent library amnesty in Cleveland. Beside Julie stands an equally fascinating character - a would-be weightlifter who became so absorbed in his chosen sport that he completely forgot about returning the manual he borrowed way back in 1967. The determination and passion for weightlifting must have consumed him entirely, leading him astray from his library responsibilities. This snapshot captures not only these intriguing stories but also highlights the importance of libraries as pillars of education and literacy within communities. Despite their long absence from shelves, staff at the Stockton library turned a blind eye when over 6,800 overdue books were returned throughout Cleveland's 43 branches. Nigel Leonard skillfully immortalizes this moment through his lens, reminding us of how books can captivate our hearts and minds while simultaneously emphasizing the vital role librarians play in fostering knowledge and encouraging reading habits among individuals like Julie Smith.
