Learning through football... Holmfirth Junior School pupils Sophie Carr (front), Crystal Ward and James Bowers measure Huddersfield Towns pitch in a pioneering education project. The nine-year-olds were the first of hundreds of local youngsters who will spend a Wednesday afternoon testing maths, geography, history and English skills at the Leeds Road ground. The club is one of the first in Britain to take part in a teaching initiative called Football Approach to Cross-curricular Topics - FACT. Said Town secretary Chris Patzelt: " It is based on the premise you can teach anything in Junior school via the medium of football." Children will learn about maths by measuring the pitch and ground, find out about geographical location and what vegetation and industry surround it and about the history of the club. 11th September 1991
