EDITORS COMMENTS
Working with Welephant. . . West Yorkshire Fire Service's safety conscious friend visited Rowley Hill playgroup. The visit was arranged by care trainee Clair Hannam, who is on work placement with the group. She organised the visit as a project for the City and Guilds course in care, which she is taking through Y Training, Lockwood. Welephant, the beloved fire safety mascot (pictured alongside Station Officer Harry Stoyles of Birkenshaw), captivated children at Rowley Hill playgroup as he shared important lessons about fire safety and the dangers of playing with matches. With his vibrant red uniform and friendly demeanor, Welephant effortlessly engaged young minds in understanding how to prevent fires and stay safe. Station Officer Stoyles also took part in this educational event by sharing insights into the heroic work done by firefighters. His presence added an extra layer of excitement as children eagerly listened to stories about brave men and women who protect our communities from fire hazards. This heartwarming photograph captures a moment that not only raises awareness but also highlights the importance of educating children about fire safety from an early age. It serves as a reminder that initiatives like these are crucial for building a safer future for all. Taken on 18th June 1991, this image transports us back to the 1990s when such community-driven efforts were celebrated. It represents an era where education, awareness, and supplementing traditional learning methods played vital roles in shaping responsible citizens.
