EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back to the 1920s, offering a general view of the infamous Royal Bethlem Hospital, commonly known as Bedlam. The hospital's vast 14-acre site and grounds were acquired by Viscount Rothermere with a noble purpose in mind. In an act of remembrance for his late mother, he decided to transform this historically significant location into a public park. The Geraldine Mary Harmsworth Park, as it will be named, is set to become a permanent memorial honoring Viscount Rothermere's beloved mother. This generous gift will more than double the available public space for residents in densely-populated London. It serves as both a tribute to his family and an opportunity for people from all walks of life to enjoy nature within the city limits. Once notorious for its association with mental illness and institutionalization, this photograph captures not only the physical structure but also symbolizes progress in society's understanding and treatment of mental health issues during that era. As we gaze upon this historical image, we are reminded of how far we have come in terms of compassionately addressing such matters. Mirrorpix has preserved this snapshot from Memory Lane Prints, allowing us to reflect on our past while appreciating the positive changes that continue shaping our present-day attitudes towards mental health care.
