The bridge was designed and constructed by Sir W.G. Armstrong and Company Limited of Elswick, the work being begun in the year 1873. It was first used for road traffic on the 15th June 1876 and opened for river traffic on the 17th July 1876.

The Newcastle Swing Bridge: A Testament to Engineering Brilliance and Trade Expansion. This print captures the iconic Newcastle Swing Bridge, a remarkable feat of engineering that stands as a testament to the city's commitment to improving navigation and expanding trade in the late 19th century. Built by the Tyne Improvement Commission under powers granted by the Tyne Improvement Act of 1861, this bridge was an integral part of their ambitious plan to open up the upper reaches of the river for larger vessels. Designed and constructed by Sir W. G. Armstrong and Company Limited of Elswick, work on this magnificent structure commenced in 1873. Finally opening its gates for road traffic on June 15th, 1876, followed shortly after by river traffic on July 17th, it quickly became an essential link connecting both sides of Newcastle. The Swing Bridge proudly represents not only a marvel in architectural design but also holds historical significance as it is actually the fourth bridge built at this very location over the mighty River Tyne. Its elegant silhouette gracefully spans across shimmering waters against a backdrop of bustling cityscape. As we gaze upon this timeless image captured in black and white during the vibrant 1960s era, let us appreciate how this majestic structure has stood strong throughout history - symbolizing progress, connectivity, and prosperity for generations past and present.
