EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures Mary Edwards Walker, an extraordinary American physician and reformer, in the year 1867. Born on November 26, 1832, in Oswego, New York, Walker defied societal norms and expectations with her pioneering work in the medical field and her unwavering commitment to social reform. Walker's groundbreaking career began when she studied medicine at Syracuse Medical College in 1855, becoming one of the few women to earn a medical degree at the time. During the Civil War, she served as a contract surgeon for the Union Army, wearing a uniform of her own design - trousers and a short skirt, which she believed allowed greater freedom and mobility in the operating theater. Her innovative attire caused controversy, and she was eventually court-martialed and discharged from the army. Despite the setback, Walker continued to practice medicine and advocate for women's rights and gender equality. In 1869, she became the first woman to receive the Medal of Honor for her services during the Civil War. The medal was later revoked due to her controversial attire, but it was eventually restored in 1911. This photograph, taken in 1919, shows Walker in her later years, still defying convention with her bold fashion choice. Her unyielding spirit and determination to challenge societal norms continue to inspire generations. Mary Edwards Walker's legacy as a physician, reformer, and trailblazer is an essential part of American history, and her story serves as a reminder of the power of perseverance and the importance of challenging the status quo.
