This photograph captures the W.S.P.U (Women's Social and Political Union) Fife and Drum Band during their inaugural performance in May 1909. The band, formed just a few months prior, was an innovative means for the suffragettes to generate public awareness and support for their cause, which was to secure women's right to vote. The band, consisting of both men and women, can be seen proudly displaying their instruments, with Mary Leigh, the drum major, taking command on the extreme right. The WSPU Fife and Drum Band made its debut at the Princes Skating Rink in Knightsbridge, London, where they advertised the Women's Exhibition, held from the 13th to the 26th of May.
