EDITORS COMMENTS
DeWitt Clinton (1769-1828): A Pioneering American Statesman This portrait captures the likeness of DeWitt Clinton, an influential American statesman and political leader, born on July 2, 1769. Clinton's political career spanned over four decades, during which he played a significant role in shaping the political landscape of New York and the United States. Clinton's early political activities began in New York, where he served as a member of the New York State Assembly and later became the Mayor of New York City in 1811. In 1812, he was elected as the Governor of New York, a position he held for three terms until 1817 and 1822. One of Clinton's most notable achievements was his role in the construction of the Erie Canal, which connected the Great Lakes to the Hudson River, significantly boosting New York's economy and making it a major transportation hub. Clinton's vision and determination were instrumental in securing funding and support for the project, which was completed in 1825. Clinton's political beliefs were rooted in the Democratic-Republican Party, and he was a staunch supporter of Thomas Jefferson and James Madison. In 1812, he ran for the presidency but ultimately lost the election to James Monroe. Despite this setback, Clinton continued to serve his state and country, advocating for education, infrastructure development, and economic growth. He passed away on February 11, 1828, leaving behind a rich legacy as a visionary statesman who helped shape the future of New York and the United States. This portrait, taken by renowned photographer Mary Evans Picture Library from Mary Evans Prints Online, is a testament to Clinton's enduring impact on American history. The image captures the intensity and intelligence of a man who dedicated his life to public service and left an indelible mark on his nation.
