This stunning handcolored copperplate stipple engraving depicts a male and female White-headed Lemur, Eulemur albifrons, in their natural habitat. The White-headed Lemur, also known as the White-headed Greater Bamboo Lemur, is an endemic primate species native to Madagascar. The male, as shown in this illustration, is characterized by its distinctive white fur on the head and chest, while the female's fur is mostly gray. Both sexes have long, bushy tails and large, round ears. This engraving was created in 1816 as part of Frederic Cuvier's Dictionary of Natural Science: Mammals, published in Paris, France. The illustration was painted by Jean Gabriel Pretre, who was a painter of natural history at Empress Josephine's zoo and later became an artist to the Museum of Natural History. The engraving was then executed by Guyard, directed by Pierre Jean-Francois Turpin, and published by F.G. Levrault. The White-headed Lemur is currently listed as vulnerable on the IUCN Red List, with populations declining due to habitat loss and fragmentation.
