1839 Salle Spectacle Versailles

EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning 1839 print captures the grandeur of the Versailles Theatre, also known as "La Salle de Spectacle," located within the historic Château de Versailles in France. The theatre, which was built between 1770 and 1771 under the direction of Jean-Baptiste Marie Pierre, served as a venue for royal entertainments and public performances. The print showcases the theatre's impressive neoclassical architecture, with its ornate columns, intricate moldings, and gilded details. The stage is set with a backdrop of richly decorated scenery, suggesting a grand production is underway. The seating area is filled with rows of plush red velvet seats, providing a luxurious experience for the audience. At the time of this print, the Versailles Theatre was undergoing significant renovations to restore its former glory. King Louis-Philippe had taken an interest in the theatre and commissioned architects Jacques-Ignace Hittorff and Gabriel-Jean-Antoine Davioud to oversee the restoration. The print reflects the progress of these renovations, with the theatre's exterior appearing more complete than it had in previous years. The Versailles Theatre holds a significant place in French history, having hosted numerous important events throughout the centuries. It was here that the famous actress Mademoiselle Mars played the title role in Racine's Phèdre in 1677, and it was the site of the first performance of Beethoven's Symphony No. 3, "Eroica," in 1820. Today, the theatre continues to be a popular tourist destination and a symbol of the opulence and grandeur of the French monarchy.
