EDITORS COMMENTS
This print, dated June 28, 1785, offers a glimpse into the lively and cultured atmosphere of Vauxhall Gardens, a popular nighttime entertainment destination in London during the late 18th century. The image is filled with an expansive crowd, all gathered before the grand pavilion, eager to enjoy the evening's festivities. At the lower left corner of the print, the enchanting figure of Mrs. Weichsel, also known as Mrs. Billington, is gracefully performing on stage. Her voice, described as "the most beautiful in Europe," had drawn a large audience to the gardens that night. Mrs. Billington's captivating presence is further emphasized by the rapt attention of the crowd, their faces illuminated by the flickering light of the torches. Among the audience, notable figures from London's literary and social scene can be spotted. Dr. Samuel Johnson, the renowned author and literary critic, is seated at a table, engrossed in his meal. His companions, James Boswell and Oliver Goldsmith, are seated at the ends of the table, deep in conversation. To the right of the center, the Prince of Wales, the future George IV, can be seen whispering in the ear of Perdita, later identified as Mrs. Robinson. The print beautifully encapsulates the vibrant and eclectic mix of people that frequented Vauxhall Gardens, from the aristocracy to the literary elite, all united by their shared appreciation for music, entertainment, and the enchanting atmosphere of the gardens.
